Hong Kong business events industry calls on government for more support
On August 11, 2020, the Hong Kong Exhibition & Convention Industry Association (HKECIA) presented the results of a recent member survey to representatives of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, urging the authority to provide more support to help the Hong Kong exhibition and convention industry to ride out the COVID-19 storm.
More than 90 per cent of survey respondents stated that the Convention and Exhibition Industry Subsidy Scheme – which commits HK$1020 million to subsidise participants and organisers of business events – is insufficient.
In fact, to date, no event organiser has received any subsidy under the scheme, as its original start date of July 24 was deferred by the government and no new date has been set.
HKECIA chairman Mr Stuart Bailey commented: “Only four small-scale consumer exhibitions took place from February to July. All other exhibitions and conventions scheduled to take place have not been held. No event being held means that there has been zero cash generated by organisers, venues, and suppliers to the industry. The Subsidy Scheme, however, is only able to assist the convention and exhibition sector once it is practicable for events to resume, a point which we have yet to reach. We urge the government to provide immediate and additional financial assistance for event organisers and event related service providers.”
All survey respondents projected a loss of revenue this year, with 36 per cent of them projecting a loss of more than HK$100 million.

Pan Pacific Perth paying it forward
By Brad Foster
The Pan Pacific Perth team has been anything but idle since COVID-19 sank its teeth into the hospitality sector in April, with its latest initiative of helping the less fortunate come to fruition following the launch of Bobby’s BBQ Truck.
The food truck now serves up bacon and egg rolls, steak sandwiches and nachos seven days a week with money raised from sales being given to Ruah Community Service to secure a permanent home for someone sleeping rough on the streets of Perth.
Local philanthropist Gary Dunkerly of Osborne Motor Group built and donated a food truck after hearing Pan Pacific Perth GM, Rob Weeden, on local radio outline the hotel’s hope for helping the homeless.
Local butcher Paul McGloughlin donates 20kgs of bacon each week to keep the bacon and egg rolls flowing.
micenet congratulates everybody involved on such a wonderful initiative.

Come back plan: Daydream Island Resort and Living Reef
As we’re writing this, the weather is fine and sunny… which has us dreaming a little dream of a faraway tropical island.
Coincidently, our first come back plan of the week is for Daydream Island Resort and Living Reef, a venue which has been working hard during these recent and uncertain times.
