Pialligo Estate Farmhouse Restaurant
Jill Varley escapes fire but not so Pialligo Estate
micenet's associate editor Jill Varley was shocked to learn that just two hours after tucking into an array of head chef Darren Perryman's specialties with such new and hospitable friends at Canberra's Pialligo Estate Farmhouse Restaurant last Thursday fire consumed the beautiful building.
While the cause of the fire remains unknown, Pialligo Estate general manager Charlie Costello said they were "thankful that everyone is safe, however as a business we are of course devastated."
Other operations are continuing as normal, including corporate events and weddings booked for the coming weeks. Co-owner Rowan Brennan said: "Even though we lost the iconic farmhouse, they pretty much saved everything else."
Everything else includes the four Garden Pavilions able to host up to 20 people in each pavilion or a grazing cocktail party for 300 in the Glasshouse.
ICMSA team
Country air clears the mind for ICMS Australasia
Leading PCO, ICMS Australasia, recently held a strategic planning workshop for its senior staff at Spicers Estate in the Hunter Valley. The group convened from its Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane offices, choosing the Hunter Valley because of its proximity to Sydney and excellent accommodation infrastructure.
ICMSA managing director, Emma Bowyer, (front row, second from right) who led the workshop, said that it was vital to escape the office in order to concentrate on ways to improve the efficiency of the business for the benefit of clients. It also gave the senior staff an opportunity to engage in "blue sky thinking" to try and determine trends in the industry and predict how it might look in five years' time.
Although the company has held annual conferences for all staff for many years this was the first time that such a gathering had taken place for a select group of the team. Following its success, these workshops will now be held every six months.

Daydream's director of sales and marketing, Jayson Heron, said that bookings will be reopening for Daydream from October 16, 2017, for stays from October 2018 onwards.

World Health Organization
WHO members meet in Brisbane
World Health Organization (WHO) members from the Western Pacific Region converged on the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) last week to discuss future priorities for the health and well-being of the region's nearly 1.9 billion people.
The meeting was also seen as an opportunity to share relevant learnings of Australia's world-class health system with its closest neighbours. Prior to the meeting, Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced a $300 million package designed to prevent disease outbreak across the Pacific as WHO's Health Emergency Program executive director, Dr Peter Salama, warns the threat of a pandemic was increasing because of a variety of factors including climate change, urbanisation and population displacement.
Around 300 attended the meeting in Brisbane.
