Thai King
Respect requested after passing of Thai King
The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau has released a statement that meetings and events booked in Thailand within the next 30-day mourning period following the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej to be respectful of the grieving of the nation.
Prime Minister Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha has requested the cooperation from both the public and private sectors in cancellation of any planned celebratory events and entertainment programs during the next month as a measure of respect for the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was, at the time of his death, the world’s longest-serving head of state, and the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history. He reigned since June 9, 1946, serving for 70 years and 126 days.
Have Samsung Galaxy Note 7, can’t travel
Qantas has followed U.S. carriers by prohibiting travellers from carrying the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 on flights.
The decision follows the potential fire risk of the device following a number of incidents with the phone worldwide. Samsung is undergoing a global recall of the phones.
Travellers cannot carry the phones on the aircraft or in their check-in luggage. No doubt other airlines will follow suit.
A whole lot of Hobbit
When you’ve been in the business events industry as long as micenet associate editor Jill Varley has you've been there and done that. Attending the Conventions & Incentives New Zealand annual conference in Hamilton last week she was blown away by the Hobbiton attraction where the gala dinner was held.
Pictured with CINZ’s CEO, Sue Sullivan, and co-owner Russell Anderson, Jill said: "It was like being a part of the film. The way they put it together and the fact that everybody dressed up for the event was something I’ll never forget. It has been a real highlight of my year travelling in 2016."
Obviously, the venue would be a great one for gala dinners for either meetings or incentives.
Raffles Singapore
Iconic Raffles Singapore to be refurbished
We don’t often report on venue upgrades in this e-newsletter but we couldn’t resist with news that the Raffles Singapore is set to embark on a careful and sensitive restoration program.
The restoration will be conducted over three phases, with Phase One starting in January 2017 and focusing on the Raffles Hotel Arcade. Phase Two will begin in mid-2017 when restoration efforts will commence on the main hotel building and lobby as well as a portion of the hotel suites. The property will close for Phase 3 near the end of 2017 to focus on the accommodation rooms, with a reopening scheduled for the second quarter of 2018.
Declared a National Monument by the Singapore Government in 1987, Raffles Singapore has, through the years, gained local and international recognition as an oasis for the well-travelled with its unique blend of classical architecture and tropical garden setting. It was opened in 1887.

2016 ICESAP conference in Singapore
As the third annual Incentive, Conference and Event Society Asia Pacific (ICESAP) conference to be held in Singapore (November 30 to December 2) rapidly approaches, one of the first topics on this year’s comprehensive program will be risk minimisation.
ICESAP President Nigel Gaunt said the incentives, conferences and events industry has been especially vulnerable and impacted over recent years to a seemingly non-stop array of unexpected adverse events and their commercial consequences.
"These events have ranged from political unrest and upheaval to pandemics and natural disasters. Recently we have seen both the tragic human effects of the Zika Virus and its economic impact on the high profile 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil," he said.
